Pyrus Cydonia description

_Pyrus cydonia_ is the taxonomic name for a plant also known as Cydonia oblonga. It bears fruit commonly called quince. Quince is a stone fruit similar to a pear, but with a sharper, less sweet flavor. Although it can be eaten raw, it is generally made into jams, jellies, and beverages. Quince can benefit skin, depending on which part of the plant is used. The fruit and its peel, while abundant in free radical-fighting antioxidants, also contain tannins which contribute to its astringency, and unfortunately, can cause skin irritation. Extracts from _Pyrus cydonia_’s leaves, however, are a bit different. One study found that the methanolic leaf extract of the quince was comparable in antioxidant content to that of antioxidant powerhouse green tea leaves. Scientists also found evidence that parts of the quince might have a UV-protective impact on skin. While more research is needed to demonstrate this plant’s benefit for skin, what does exist so far is promising.
