Amyl Salicylate description

Amyl salicylate is a synthetic fragrance ingredient that is the ester of amyl alcohol and salicylic acid. It is a frequent additive in perfumes and described as having a floral or balsamic scent. While amyl salicylate might impart a pleasant scent to lotions and creams, there is no research showing it has any benefit for skin. In fact, some studies have shown that amyl salicylate is a contact allergen. There is also growing concern about amyl salicylate’s impact on the environment. Research is pointing to concentrations of amyl salicylate in wastewater impacting mussel populations in the Mediterranean, causing cell death. Ongoing studies are being conducted to determine amyl salicylate’s full environmental impact. Because of this and its potential skin risk, amyl salicylate is an ingredient we recommend avoiding.
